Elizabeth moved into her 1890’s Victorian mid terrace in 2001. She became interested in the idea of eco renovation through talking to her neighbours, leaflets and a Warm Homes event. What spurred her into making the changes to her home were talking to Cambridge Carbon Footprint and by making the decision to stay in her home for a long as possible – so she needed to make it warm.
Insulation and heating: Her property has now been fitted out with loft, wall and underfloor insulation and she now also has double glazed windows throughout the property and has air sealed around the edge of her floors to stop drafts and heat loss. In addition to this, she has also installed some more cost efficient methods such as draft strips and radiator reflectors to aid the reduction of air movement and heat loss. A new boiler has also been installed to replace the older inefficient one. Appliances, lighting and water: A new A+ energy rated fridge-freezer has been placed in the kitchen and LED and Low Energy lighting has been placed throughout the house where possible. Water butts have also become a feature of this property and Elizabeth also uses Hippos in the WCs to conserve water usage.
