Peter moved into this 1897 Victorian semi in 1978 and joined with Meg in the property next door in 1997. Eco renovations has been a lifetime obsession for him which started with the publishing of ‘The Autonomous House’ by Rob and Brenda Vale (architects and writers of a guide to easy to maintain, energy-self-sufficient buildings which aesthetically fit comfortably with the setting). The public awareness of climate change was also a major push towards making the choices they have in living more sustainably and consciously.
Insulation: The house has now been installed with insulation underfloor and also within the internal walls where the two houses have been joined. Double glazing and secondary glazing have been introduced to the property to maintain warmth and, in places, the original aesthetics.
Heating: They have changed to a condensing boiler and are also now using solar thermal heating with a thermal store which supplies the underfloor heating in the kitchen. This also captures heat from the boiler as well as. These aspects have enabled them to achieve a zoning system within their home.
Lighting and Appliances: LEDs and CFL (Compact fluorescent lamp) have been installed throughout and they have also changed their fridge to an A+ rating. All of which are contributing.
